There's a new kind of bike map out these days. Seattle's Cascade Bicycle Club has
launched an online mapping tool that gives the public, including in Spokane, a place to report bicycle collisions, hazards and thefts, and look at trends.
Since the map went online a couple weeks ago, more than 125 people have registered and reported 30 collisions in Seattle alone. People have posted where road hazards
exist for cyclists in cities in Washington and six other states, although there hasn't been any information input for the Spokane area yet that I could see.
So be the first in our area to register. Here's the link. Get going and let us know the challenges you face when bicycling.
Want to know what transportation projects are proposed for Spokane County, what your alternatives are to driving alone, and how to find out about local road closures or backups caused by accidents and other incidents? This blog is designed to educate the public on all transportation-related issues in Spokane County.

This kind of thing can help pinpoint bad intersections, line of sight issues and other elements. That should help improve transportation planning for all of us--no one WANTS to be in a crash!
People (not just cyclists!) should also use MyBikeLane.com to record cars parked in bike lanes: take good photos showing a close-up of the license plate and a shot of the car in the lane (preferably with bike lane or no parking signage clearly visible).
The Bicycle Advisory Board is working with the Spokane Police Dept to get a follow-up plan so the owner of the vehicle will receive a letter.
I wish I had the flip side: Somewhere that I could thank the two very courteous drivers on SE Blvd today (6/9/09) around 6pm. Both waited for me to ride uphill past them before making their move: One was parking, one was turning right on 14th. Sometimes in those same circumstances the driver accelerates past, then makes the move in a way that cuts off the cyclist. Thank you, little blue car and gold sedan!
