Officials are worried that the annual 'Skyfest' at Fairchild Airforce Base could tie up traffic on Highway 2 this weekend. WSDOT is warning of heavy congestion, slow traffic, stopped traffic, and long delays on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Here's the game plan to hopefully ease that situation, and a schedule of Skyfest events.

Too bad they put bicycles on the list of prohibited items. Encouragement of bike commuting could have helped address the anticipated congestion.
A bike commuter who inquired via email about bike entry and where to lock up his bike received a very brief reply that just referred him to their information page on prohibited items. Not a bike-friendly answer.
It's especially unfortunate since employees at Fairchild, both military and civilian, were enthusiastic participants in Bike to Work Week.

A clarification to my previous post, received from the employee transportation coordinator at Fairchild:
"The website and public affairs contact were unclear. The "prohibited items" were not allowed to be taken through the security checkpoint/metal detectors onto the active flightline. Bicycles and other
'prohibited items' would not be suited for the crowded area within the checkpoint; these would create a safety and security concern. However, bicycles were permitted anywhere on base and in the parking areas, as long as they were not taken through the metal detectors at the security
checkpoint."
In fact, he and a friend biked to Skyfest and were out and away long before any of the cars stuck in the jam.

Thanks for the clarification Barb. Maybe next year organizers will know to make their stance regarding bicycles a little clearer in advance of the actual event.
