I went to Houston, TX earlier this year and my main takeways were:
It's because of that last point, and because bikes are good for business, that bicycling appears to be catching on across the state that loves their cars (heck, a lot of oil and gas companies are located there). Houston is approving millions of dollars in bonds for bike trails, San Antonio is building "bikeable" roads and Dallas is planning over a thousand miles of bike lanes.

- Sprawling freeways (and sprawl in general),
- Very few curbs, sidewalks, bike lanes, etc. The roads just kind of seemed to stop at an edge,
- Tons of roadkill and trash along the roads,
- Lots of traffic jams.
