Bus Riders Not Happy About Route Elimination

Spokane Transit is cutting my bus route and from the rumblings I've been hearing lately the riders don't like it. They're starting to mobilize to do something about it though. A man carrying a tiny baby in a front pack was handing out flyers this morning on the bus that showed the proposed service reduction to our route, as well as a link to the STA survey with the words underneath, 'Take the rider survey and tell them what a bad idea this is!'

Get ready STA, you're about to be deluged with comments from some angry office workers. Some of those older ladies scare me too. They're nice and all but I have a feeling they don't take 'no' for an answer often.

Here's the link to the survey if you want to take it yourself.

I went to the public meeting for the northeast part of Spokane on the cuts STA may make next September, and while the Northeast part of Spokane did not get many cuts (we got a bunch in the 2010 cuts) they all will hurt someone. I was rather surprised that several people asked what it would take to stop the 2012 cuts, and they said we could ask the board to increase the sales tax to the maximum .009 from the .006 it is today and that would generate enough income to avoid the 2012 cuts. Note also I said MAY cut next September, this is a proposal and so far NOT set in stone until the public hearings are over, and STA is willing to go out and listen to any group interested. The one tonight in Medical Lake should be a real eye opener, as they cut ALL service to Medical Lake.

Well 10 points to Jeff Selle in our office. He called it. When we heard they were cutting the 72 route to Liberty Lake there was a lot of discussion about why you would cut a busy route like that. Jeff predicted they would cut until someone asked 'How do we stop this?' and the answer would be to put a tax increase on the ballot. I guess that was an easy one to see coming though.

Yeah, that Medical Lake cut will be a hard one for the folks out there. I've heard from some of them already and they're pretty worried.

Thanks for including Charles that they're PROPOSED cuts by the way.

Besides being proposed cuts STA does listen. Last year they proposed cutting the #27 on Saturday and Sunday to once an hour instead of half hour as now and shorter hours also on the weekends. So many people complained that they did not change the weekend schedule.

That's what Karl from STA said when he was over here a couple weeks ago and we were harrassing him. No matter what, someone loses in this case, which is unfortunate but so common right now considering the economy.
