Come See SRTC At This Weekend's Spokane Summer Parkways Event

If you missed the first Spokane Summer Parkways, you've got one more chance to check it out this summer. There will be another of the events held this Sunday, August 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The focus at Spokane Summer Parkways is on recreation, fitness, and community. Threee miles of Howard Street will be closed to automobile traffic and opened to bicyclists, pedestrians, skaters, and other human-powered transportation. There will also be other activities like yoga, zumba, hula hooping, tai chi, pilates, music, giveaways, food, a bike decorating contest and much more.

I attended the last event and it was a blast. And there were tons of people there, so the people watching was fabulous.
Here's a link to more info and a video from the last event.

SRTC will be there also this Sunday, talking to people about our Transportation Vision Project. The boss man gave me a break, so it won't be me down there this weekend, but be sure to stop by our table and speak to our great consultant team member Laurie about your transportation 'vision' for the future.

I can't remember if it was you guys who planned this or not, but if not, maybe you can pass on the suggestion.

I was really excited about the summer parkways, but missed both because they were scheduled right in during church. And, I'm sure I'm not alone.

Next year, if these get scheduled when half of the city is not at church, you might get an even better turnout.
I was disappointed to not even catch the tail-end after church, because my daughter decided she REALLY needed to take a nap. So, all-around, doing it on a Saturday, or further in to the afternoon would be much better for maximizing the number of people who might be available to attend.

Thanks for the comment Rachel. We (meaning I) were originally on the planning committee, but got so tied up with the Visioning Project that I had to drop some things, and unfortunately that was one of them. I will pass your suggestion on to the committee though. I've heard the same thing from a couple other people.

I wasn't at the event most of the time yesterday, but came downtown toward the end to help clean up our table. There were still a lot of people there right up until the opened the road back up at 1:00, just walking, skating, bicycling, etc. so I think others would also like to stay later in the afternoon.

More 'Summer Parkways' are planned for next summer so the committee might consider expanded hours/different days.
